Catch it if you can!

14′ Crystal Palace 0-0 Arsenal

It has been an electric start to this new Premier League campaign from Arsenal. There is a brief pause as the referee attends to Granit Xhaka after receiving a ball to the head.

Jesus has looked awfully good in debut. No wonder he is owned by so many FPL managers!

Guaita deflects the palms of Zinchenko’s stabbing blow

10′ Crystal Palace 0-0 Arsenal

This is seriously one-way traffic so far. The Gunners are allowed to do what they want with the ball and Vicente Guaita has been forced to make the first save of the season.

The ball rolled to Zinchenko just outside Palace’s 18-yard box, but his good shot, even after a deflection, was effectively controlled by the Spaniard.

Palace under increasing pressure from the start

7′ Crystal Palace 0-0 Arsenal

If the first six minutes are anything to go by, this could be a very long night for the Palace defense. Arsenal seem to be in the mood and could easily be a couple of goals in front if it hadn’t been for a couple of lapses in concentration in the opposition box, notably from Martinelli.

Martinelli slices wide from a few yards!

4′ Crystal Palace 0-0 Arsenal

That’s incredible of Jesus, but his compatriot Martinelli should do much better. The former Manchester City striker danced through the Palace defense before the ball fell into the hands of his team-mate, who could only cut his shot wide from a few yards.

10 minute warning

We are just 10 minutes away from the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season and the mood is building very well in South London. It will be packed when the players come out of the tunnel, as will the other nine stadiums that will welcome fans this weekend.

A quick reminder that neither side can start this campaign any worse off than they did 12 months ago. Arsenal were beaten 2-0 in the first game played at the Brentford Community Stadium, while Palace were beaten by Chelsea in a 3-0 loss at Stamford Bridge.

However, when last season ended, both teams had turned their fortunes around with two wins on the final day. The Eagles bowed out with a narrow home win against Manchester United, while the Gunners outscored Everton by five in a 5-1 victory at the Emirates.

Pressure on the shoulders of Jesus

It’s a big night for Jesus tonight as he makes his first Premier League appearance for Arsenal after his big money move from Manchester City last month. After the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, the scoring weight will fall on the shoulders of the Brazilian.

Not only will Jesus have to deal with pressure from his own fan base, he also has the pressure of being the most possessed FPL asset of all time. 76.9 per cent of all managers have chosen to include the 25-year-old in their teams and will be desperate to get him up and running tonight.

For those of you wondering how you can earn points, this is how the point system works for a striker.

  • Play 60 minutes or more: 2 points
  • Goal: 4 points
  • Attendance: 3 points
  • Penalty missed: -2 points
  • Yellow card: -1 point
  • Red card: -3 points

Five subs available tonight

One of the key rule changes affecting the Premier League this season is the return of five substitutions. The manic demand from players in the top flight, especially those playing for their countries, has sparked a huge debate over whether or not managers should be allowed to make two extra changes.

The decision was, of course, to allow those additional changes throughout a match and the first example of their re-implementation will be seen tonight. Whether Vieira or Arteta will choose to make four or five substitutes remains to be seen, but both will be pleased to have that opportunity.

Supporters of the so-called smaller clubs hope that the big teams will be the only ones to benefit but, with a mid-season World Cup on the horizon, it certainly doesn’t seem like a stretch to allow all 20 teams to take part. make up to five substitutions.

Mark Carey has explained the effect it will have on the English top flight.

A great evening for the new signings

There are several new signings on display for both sides in South London tonight. Jesus, Zinchenko and Saliba will make their Premier League debuts for Arsenal tonight, while Cheick Doucoure will play his first competitive match for the hosts.

The 22-year-old isn’t necessarily a name most neutral fans have heard of, but he has significant potential. That explains exactly why his move to Palace from French side Lens cost €21m earlier this summer.

He may not be a player who brings fans to the edge of their seats, but he will play an extremely important role in the middle of the park if he is able to recreate the form he showed in Ligue 1 in the Premier League.

For the details of what Doucoure has to offer, read what Matt Woosnam and Mark Carey wrote about it below.

Will it be all or nothing for Arsenal tonight?

Arsenal have quickly become the most interesting case study in the Premier League. Not only does he have one of the youngest managers in European football, but his team also lacks genuine experience.

The release of the Amazon Prime documentary All or Nothing earlier this week gave us a behind-the-scenes look at what happened at both London Colney and the Emirates Stadium last season. It was a campaign that, at times, promised much, but ultimately felt a bit like a flop after the Gunners missed out on Champions League football at the last moment.

More episodes of the documentary will be released in due course, but our very own Nick Miller has dissected the three episodes we’ve seen so far. Read what he thought of the first installment below.

Palace feeling confident, says Mitchell

Many of tonight’s viewers will remember the crushing defeat Crystal Palace inflicted on Arsenal the last time the two teams met in April. Tyrick Mitchell has claimed that he and his team-mates are in an even better place heading into the new campaign.

“Personally, I feel very confident as the rest of the team,” he told Sky Sport. “It’s been a good season and we’re just trying to start and get better this season.

“From last season until now, I feel like we’re more of a team and we know how the manager wants us to play, so it’s [about] building on that.”

Zinchenko: The Premier League is back!

It could be a very different Gunners lineup tonight than the one we got used to towards the end of last season. One of those who will be hoping to make his competitive debut for Arsenal at Selhurst Park is four-time Premier League champion Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of tonight’s game, he said: “Honestly, I’m very happy to be here, to be a part of this amazing club. My childhood dream came true: ever since I was a kid, I was a huge fan. from Arsenal.

“Obviously I’d like to thank Manchester City for everything they’ve done for me and it’s another page now, another story, so it’s time to focus on Arsenal. It’s finally starting, the Premier League is back!”
